Thornton Gap/ Luray, VA/ Skyline Drive

With stunning views for both sunrise and sunset due to the perfectly exposed rockface, Mary’s Rock is a must-see of Shenandoah National Park

Length: 3.6 Miles

Elevation gain: 1170 Feet

Kid Friendly: Yes! Steep, but not super long.
Dog Friendly: Yes! Probably one of the most dog friendly trails I’ve ever been on as far as number of furry friends.
Baby-Wearing Friendly: Yes, no major obstacles
Will my kids whine?: Immediately, the incline starts and doesn’t let up until the top. Completely manageable though.

Parking here is plentiful. You can either park at the Panorama parking lot on Skyline Drive, or the Civil War Trails lot just past the entrance of Shenandoah National Park (if you’re heading west. If heading east, it’ll be just before the entrance).

During the first mile, the incline starts off with some retaining logs as steps and a 17-20% grade. This will get you warmed up really quick and ready to take on the rest of the hike.

Initially the trail winds around the west face of the mountain overlooking a stream. Eventually switching to look east, overlooking skyline drive as the trail narrows. During times of high precipitation, there’s an underground spring that can be heard roaring beneath the trail around mile 0.75.

Approximately one mile from the top stands a very odd and unique tree, twisted over the trail itself.

Twisted tree on the return trip

The trail has two switchbacks after the tree, and an intersection surrounded by some very dense, but beautiful, vegetation.

The top is magnificent regardless of the time of day. However, it’s best viewed on clear cool days for sunrise or sunset. The trail is well trafficked enough that in the event you do see a bear (I have a few times) they’ll leave you alone if you leave them alone.

When you’re finished taking it all in, you return the way you came.
